Ann's Entry: Romantic Films

Terinspirasi sama film MoulinRouge yang baru gue tonton di cable for the fourth time. And gue masih aja terharu nontonnya. Coz it's one of the most romantics film I ever saw. Selain itu ada Love Actually juga. Jadi pengen nulis disini film2 apa aja yang pengen gue tonton, pengen beli DVD nya buat dikoleksi based on film2 yang lom pernah gue tonton... Here we go:

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Casts: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo
Genre: Romantic, Fantasy, Comedy, Drama
Review: Joel Baris, a man who is informed that his ex-girlfriend Clementine has had her memories of their relationship erased from her brain via an experimental procedure performed by Dr. Mierzwiak . Not to be outdone, Joel decides to have the same procedure done to himself. As Mierzwiak's bumbling underlings Stanand Patrick perform the operation on Joel -- over the course of an evening, in his apartment -- Joel struggles in his own mind to save the memories of Clementine from being deleted. 2. the Notebook
Casts: Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling, James Marsden
Genre: Gentle Romantic Tale
Review: “The Notebook” is the story of a boy from the poor side of the tracks who – predictably – falls for a beautiful, rich girl. What is not so predictable is how far he’ll go to prove they were meant to be together.Rachel McAdams stars as sheltered Southern Belle, Allie Hamilton. Allie pays a visit to Seabrook, North Carolina to see her family and while there, Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) works his 'small-town boy' charms on her. Despite disparate backgrounds, the two find they’ve got a lot in common, including a zest for life - and their need to drive each other crazy. Over the span of a hot North Carolina summer, Allie and Noah fall passionately in love.But all doesn’t go smoothly for the mismatched pair of lovebirds. Allie’s mom puts the kibosh on their relationship, sending Allie off to school and out of Noah’s reach. Still Noah persists until finally, seven long years later, Allie returns to Seabrook and must choose between her rich, handsome fiancée (James Marsden) and her first love, the equally handsome but not-so-wealthy, Noah.

3.Dirty Dancing
Casts: Patrick Swayze, Cynthia Rhodes, Jennifer Grey
Genre: Drama, Musical, Romance
Review: The hero of this pack of well-toned hoofers is Johnny (Swayze), the resort dance instructor who plays by his own rules, but can’t get anyone else to play along. Baby falls instantly for him, and she sees her chance to get closer to him and that rebellion when his lifelong dance partner, Penny (Cynthia Rhodes), suffers an unwanted pregnancy and botched abortion. Though Johnny is a two-step taskmaster, he and Baby quickly become close. She gives him courage and confidence; he gives her the strength to break free from her family ties. Despite the syrupy dramatics, Dirty Dancing is still immensely appealing and Grey is the reason. Yes, I know Swayze became huge because of this movie, but I think it was more because of his physical presence. We all know he’s good looking, that women will fall for him like lemmings off of a cliff. But he has to fall for Grey, who is adorable, but certainly not a beauty queen. Most importantly, the audience has to buy them as a couple. Grey doesn’t drip with teen sensuality or flash a come hither stare. She giggles inappropriately, she curses herself for not getting dance steps right. By embodying every awkward young adult emotion about falling in love, she makes you want the romance to work. In the process, she also validates all the soap opera theatrics that revolve around her. Credit must also be given to the late Emile Ardolino, who directs the intimate scenes with Swayze and Grey with a seductive restraint that borders on the unbearable—check out the bedroom slow dance. The movie eschews sex and teenage tomfoolery for real emotions and comes out of the corner dancing up a storm.

4.Gone With the Wind
Casts: Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable,
Genre: Drama, Romance, War
Review: Scarlett O'Hara is in love with drippy Ashley Wilkes, and is devastated when he announces that he plans to marry his cousin Melanie. She pleads with Ashley to marry her instead, but then, on the first day of the Civil War, she meets mercurial Rhett Butler. A man to match her strength of character and romantic desires, Butler changes the course of her life. Despite hunger, and the burning of Atlanta, Scarlett survives the war and its aftermath, but ultimately loses the only man she really loved.


5. Big Fish
Casts: Billy Crudup, Albert Finney, Jessica Lange, Ewan McGregor
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Heroic, Love
Review: The story of Big Fish is quite simple. Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) returns home to spend what little time he has left with his dying father Edward (Albert Finney) after not speaking with him for three years and to give support to his mother Sandra (Jessica Lange). Will needs to find out the truth about who his father really is. As a boy he was told many stories of how his father, when he was a young man (played by Ewan McGregor) lived his life. Those stories, far fetched as they may have seemed, were believed way past Will's adult years and now he wants to know why so many lies about his father's life were told to him and others repeatedly and so proudly.
Big Fish is a story upon a story upon a story. So many outrageous, scary, and exciting stories unfold. Those stories are amusing, clever, eerie, and warming to the soul. But, are those stories real or just fables told so many times that they indeed become more of a work of non-fiction than just a make believe story told to amuse the listener?
